Mindful Cravings

fb_img_1483749783873

So it’s that time of year where we are trying to eat healthy and let’s be honest….we all have to fight those holiday cravings. We set goals to eat healthier or to simply lose weight. We dice into the many healthy challenges or diets that promises that we will lose the weight. However, we don’t tap into the main source of the problem, the key to why we are where we are at or why we even want to lose weight.

Be Mindful

When we set goals to lose weight or be healthy we have to ask ourselves why are we wanting to lose weight or be healthy.? What is the reasoning behind it? Is it because we want to be healthy or is it because we want to look a certain way? Next question is, “How did we get in the position we are currently in?” Was it because of stress or was it because we are dealing with something that is deep inside that we don’t want to face? These are all mindful questions we must first ask ourselves before we can begin this journey of healthy eating and healthy lifestyle. Until we tackle these questions then we will still see ourselves cycling through the treacherous cycle of weight loss and unhealthy lifestyle.

Mindful Cravings

What do we battle with the most when we are trying lose weight or eat healthier? We battle with cravings, with the feeling of not having enough. But is that truly the reason why we are having cravings? There is more to that craving and learning how to be mindful to the cravings is the key. Here is a tip the next time you have a craving, stop and think about why you are having that craving. Are you stress? Are you bored? Are you really hungry? The more we become mindful of our cravings the more we can fight them.

So as everyone is preparing for the holidays and some are already thinking about what their 2018 New Year’s resolutions and goals are going to be. First, be mindful of why you are doing what you are doing. Step into this  holiday season and preparing for the upcoming year with mindfulness of your goals and why you want to achieve them. The more we become mindful the more we are able to achieve the goals we set forth.

Why do I meditate?

So September is the start of a challenge that I created called Self Care September. Often times in our daily journey we get into the rush feeling. The way of the world is always on the go…we never stop moving…we are always doing something but we never take the time to really sit back and enjoy life. This quotes describes the concept of meditation and the art of being still so eloquently.

calm-quote

What is all this talk about Meditation?

Many people believe that meditation is all about just sitting or being. Yes that is a portion of meditation. However, there is far more to it than just sitting. Meditation allows us to not just focus on controlling our thoughts but helping to not allow our thoughts to control us.

How many times have you just caught yourself drifting away from reality?

20160904_183855

For example, this morning I was driving my youngest daughter to school and missed her turn to her school and realized wow how did I miss her turn? Well it is because I was in thought mode, I was thinking about all the things that I have going on today, all the things I need to do, all the projects that I need to be working on. So this morning I allowed my thoughts to take over my day, that moment, that experience of morning drive, the beautiful sky view that I missed. I say all of that to say that when we allow our thoughts to take over our mind we miss out on LIFE, the importance of life, the beauty of life. So stop allowing your thoughts to take control over you, live in the here and now, accept the thought and then move on.

So why do I meditate?

Enlightenment in nature

Meditation allows me to learn how to accept my thoughts, accept life struggles, turmoils and then release it. It allows me to not let my thoughts take over my life, my being, my day. It is the fitness of my mind. It strengthens my mind to maintain a level of healthiness. Building a healthy lifestyle is not just about the outward appearance but also the inward appearance.

“I AM”

Happy-Woman

Wow those two words are so BOLD and mean so much. What you put behind these two words can shape and mold you into whoever you want or desire to be. As I sit here and ponder about what these two words meant to me in 2016 it quickly reminds me of how far I have come as a woman. There are three words or phrases that come to my mind of what I felt like on last year that started with these bold two words. I AM a single mother, I AM unhappy, I AM Hurt

I AM a single mother

For some reason when I would say this to myself I would just cry. I would feel so alone and hurt. Why? I couldn’t understand why I was feeling that way, I was finally out of a situation that I didn’t want to be in but yet I still was sad. I realize that it was because I felt like a failure, I felt defeated, I felt as if I couldn’t do it on my own….. Fast-forward to today. I can replace this I AM with I AM Strong. Being a single mother truly has shown me how Strong I am and how blessed I am. I stop categorizing myself as a single mother and starting to say I am a mother who is strong, fierce, independent and well educated. I stop labeling myself as if it is negative thing to be a single mother. Will I always be this way? Only God knows? But what I do know in this second and moment that I am a blessed mother of two beautiful girls who look up to me, cherish me and love me. And that is enough for me:)

I AM UnHappy

This was a big one I had to battle. Why was I unhappy? I was finally out of a situation that was making me unhappy but yet I was still unhappy. I figured out I was unhappy not of my situation but of the unknown. I didn’t how things were going to turn out. I had to stop looking back and looking too far ahead. I had to learn how to live in the moment. I had to learn that it is okay not to not be okay. I also learned that it is okay if it doesn’t happen the way it should happen. You regroup, detour or find a new path. Once I stop trying to control my life and the changes that I was going through I began to become happier not of the situation but of how I reacted and addressed my life each and everyday.

I AM Hurt

In 2016, I suffered from a bad injury to my left foot and I was physically hurt. Well if you have ever been injured before it is very mental. Why? because if you love to do something and one day you can’t do it anymore then it can become depressing. Running as I realized was my stress reliever, it was a way where I could escape from the world and just be. Well when I realized I couldn’t do that anymore I had to learn how to re-program my mind. I truly devoted my time to meditation. I really started to focus on changing my mindset. I realize in changing my mindset that it not only helped me to mentally recover from that injury but also mentally recover from LIFE.

So I no longer use these I AM’s and now have transformed them into I AM Bold, Strong, Fearless, Content, IN LOVE with me, Unique, God’s child and so many more that I can say.

So just because your I AM may not be uplifting at this point or moment in time. Think about it, why is that your I AM? Can anything be done to change that? If so what…. then change it.

Realize that what you put behind those two words, I AM will come into reality. So speak positivity, speak life and speak happiness.

Keep Moving Forward

download-1

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King on today one of my favorite quotes from him that I utilize in my life everyday is…..

“If you can’t fly, then run

If you can’t run, then walk

If you can’t walk, then crawl

but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

Often times we face roadblocks, we have things that just seem to get in our way of achieving whatever goal that we are trying to achieve. Well let me tell you I have had plenty of those days that have occurred. But one thing that I have learned from everything that has occurred is that it is the roadblocks that have made me who I am today. Without the roadblocks I wouldn’t be the strong woman I am today. I think of it as if I am driving. So you know when you have one of those days where you are trying to go somewhere and you get this big sign that says…Roadblock. So you grouch and complain and you get mad because it is always when you are trying to go somewhere…lol But wait you look ahead and  you think you see a sign that says detour; “So what do we do?” we take the detour. Typically that detour will either put you back on that road but farther down the road or it will lead you into a different direction. I look at the same scenario and relate it to my life. I have had many roadblocks but I feel like that each roadblock was a lesson. It either taught me that I didn’t even need to go in that direction because it wasn’t for me or it taught me that I wasn’t ready at that time to face that road. I needed to do other things first and then I would be able to to get back on track. So just because you have roadblocks doesn’t mean your life is over or that you will not achieve that goal you have always wanted to achieve. It just means that there is something else that is waiting for you, something else bigger, better, more equipped to meet your needs. Whatever you do, no matter how many roadblocks come in your way, Keep Moving Forward.

I AM FEARLESS

13099_1483638447285-01

So some of you may know or may not know but I just completed a Dopey Challenge this past week which consisted of 4 days of racing. My runhomie and I ran a 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon in 4 days. So logistically we ran 48.6 miles in 4 days. I know my mouth just dropped thinking about what we just accomplished.

So about 3-4 months ago I suffered an aggravating injury of plantar fascitis. If any of you have ever been injured before you know that it can be very aggravating when you are not able to do the things you love to do. Well you can imagine how I felt. This race was planned back in December of 2015 so when you realize in September 2016 that there is a strong possibility that you will not be able to walk, run or do any type of physical activity it can be very discouraging.

20160912_21051820160914_173009
Fast-Forward to January 2017

So I took time off which was sacrificing my ability to truly train. I had to become very creative and train differently to allow my foot time to heal. Well as I was flying to go to Florida to complete this big race so much fear came over me. I kept playing the “What if” card and I even did that on the last day of the 4 days prior to my marathon race. Finally, I said Fe if you quit every time you are fearful you will never accomplish anything. So I did my morning prayer, meditation and yoga that morning and I laced up my shoes and said to myself, “Let’s Do This”

Many of you have fears right now, fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of looking a certain way. My words to you is don’t let FEAR stop you from accomplishing something BIG in your life. If I allowed FEAR to take over then I would have never known my biggest strength, my abilities to accomplish the unknown. I would have never been able to CREATE MAGIC. So stop letting FEAR take over your life and start stepping out on FAITH! Start creating MAGIC in your life.

You can do it…..Dreams do come true….Mine did and they are still coming true.

Set Intentions versus Resolutions

20160904_183855

So it’s that time of year again where everyone begins to make their New Year Resolution….most common one being “to lose weight”. The gyms are packed, the studios are filled with individuals who have set out to make that New Year Resolution. And then it happens……30 days later, 60 days later, 90 days later the hopes of achieving that New Year Resolution begins to fade away. People get the feeling of lost hope, or they just quit. They start to doubt themselves and feel as if they have failed themselves. Why? because of the notion that if you don’t achieve that New Year Resolution you have lost the battle, lost the fight.

I say NO to the New Year Resolution and say YES to intentions. Intentions are things that you create to help better yourself as an individual, as a person.

What does that look like?

I set the intentions each and everyday to be a better version of myself. Do I relapse some days or have some bad days?  Heck Yeah, but guess what? I start all over again the next day. Everyday is a new day to begin again. It is a new day to start over. When you set intentions on becoming better each day you are giving your self a cushion to fall but yet also a chance to learn from the mistakes, the falls and mishaps. Socrates says it best, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new. So stop trying to fight the old with New Year Resolutions but let’s set the intentions on building the new. How do you do this? by striving each and everyday to become a healthier you, better version of you.

Page 1 of 365 Days

smartselectimage_2017-01-01-08-41-24

Today marks the first day of the year, the first page in your 365 days of the book of life for this year. What will you write? What did you write for on your first page? What will you challenge yourself to do, to be in these pages? Will you paint this book full of color or will it be blank? Today is the day, once this page turns then you can go back but it will not be the same, the page will not feel the same, the memories placed in it will not be the same. I challenge to not wait until you get half way in the middle of your 365 day book to write something. Start today, start making that book colorful, full of life, full of hope, full of possibility, full of passion. Does it take the page to be full to be full of life? No it takes the willingness to just be, to just do, to just show up as YOU! So here is to a book full of color, full of magic, full of possibility, full of happiness, full of joy, full of creativity, full of the best of version of YOU!

So let the writing begin, let the imagination begin. Here is to the BEST of VERSION OF YOU!

It’s ok to not be OK

20160904_183855

So back from my hiatus from writing this blog post is inspired by a post that I read from RunTriMom on yesterday.

This is NOT OK

So on last Monday I was running my long run of 13 miles with my #runhomie and it just seemed like nothing that morning was going right. I had to stop several times to use the restroom, the gas station I normally stop at the employee was on break so I couldn’t use the restroom; so I had to proceed on with my run. If you have ever tried to run and you have to use the restroom then you know what I am talking about, not the best feeling ever. Then as I was running my heel begin to bother me; well at first I was like it just seems tight so I will keep running to see if it loosens up; well it did. Then I proceeded to run and it did just that it started to loosen up so I began to think okay well this is not going to be as bad as I thought.

20160912_054535

Ummmm I was rudely awakened

I get about at the half way point of the run and of course we are out there so the only back is to just walk all the way back or run back. So I proceeded to run back.

Then it happened

I get back to my car and when I stopped I could feel it. It was not good, I was not okay.

So then I did what was the right thing to do, I went to the doctor and they told me I had a heel spur.

20160912_210518

I said to myself really not something else again, my exact words were, “Why can I not be GREAT?

So at this point I felt like there was so much going on in my life, from single motherhood to dealing with beginning stages of divorce, managing a job, two girls, one income, training and just LIFE.

I was forced to face reality, I was forced to say Fe you are not okay but guess what you will be okay.

20160914_173009

See we all have this thing called pride that often times we have to face. We are ashamed of saying,

“You know what I am struggling today.”

“You know what I am having an OFF day today”

or

“You know what I am not OK at this moment”

What makes us stronger is the ability to recognize that and know that we will not be in that state very long.

To know that there is HOPE

To know that everything will be OK

To know that it is okay to have those days

To know that it is those days that help build us, help make us stronger

So what did I learn?

I learn that it is okay to not be OK.

It is okay to have an OFF day.

It is okay to say I am having an OFF day.

It is okay to say I am struggling right now.

What else did I learn?

It is when we face that everything is not OK that is when we BUILD that is when we get STRONGER that is when we begin to have HOPE that even though at this very moment in time it may not be okay but I know that everything will be okay.
