So what does FIT look like?

It’s crazy as I was having this conversation today to someone about what is beautiful to them? What does it mean to be beautiful? What does it mean to look fit? Everyone has this common image in their head of what being FIT looks like. We compare ourselves to models and other images that social media has placed on us of what being FIT should look like.

I use to have the same image in my head of if I lose at least 20 more lbs then I will finally be FIT or look FIT. As I continued to work out and continued to fluctuate in weight I realized that I was chasing a destination not a way of life.

When I began this fitness journey I expected to look a certain way but as I continued to follow along with the journey I realized that fitness is not just physical. Fitness is a way of living, its creating a lifestyle that is healthy both physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally.When I began cross training more and really lifting weights I noticed my body was changing. I wasn’t skinny like I use to be, I was becoming thick. In my head I kept saying, “Fe you need to lose weight, you need to be in this size” Then I realized as I was putting my clothes on one day that my pants size was actually smaller than the size I was in before. I realize, “Fe you are healthy, you are strong now.” That is when it dawned on me that FIT doesn’t mean you are suppose to be certain size, it means that you are free of disease, you are healthy in both mind, body and spirit. I also began to realize the more that I focused on creating a healthy lifestyle for myself and my girls the more I became FIT.

So what does FIT look like for me?

You Can’t Outrun Your Fork (#TeamBLKGRLFLY)

 

So how many times have you heard the statement, “You are what you eat” Well that is true. Often times in our fitness journey we get so stuck on how many miles we are running, or how much cardio we are getting in, or did we get that strength training workout in for today. Did you know…FIFTY percent of Black women develop Type 2 diabetes at some point during their lifetime (American Psychological Association), which means you can’t just workout. But what are we doing the rest of the day? How are we fueling our bodies from the workouts? What are we eating on the days we don’t get to the gym?

It’s a Puzzle Piece

Healthy Lifestyle is like a puzzle…..if there is one piece missing from the puzzle then that puzzle will not be complete. There are so many aspects that encompass a healthy lifestyle:

Mental Aspect

Physical Aspect

Nutrition

Spiritual Aspect

Did you know that each one of these categories can effect what you are putting on your plate? Not getting enough sleep…we typically resort to coffee, caffeinated drinks, food, snacks. What are you doing in each of this categories? How are you completing your puzzle piece? Is there a missing piece in your puzzle?

So the magic question is….How do I include all of these aspects into my healthy journey? How can I be a healthier me…looking and feeling great? Well it’s simply……But you’ll have to come check us out to here more about it…..

I AM Transforming

Wow these words mean a lot, it reminds me of the movie, “The Transformers.” How they would transform into these big time cars, fancy, extravagant cars fully armed and ready. That is how I feel about life. We can either choose to remain the same, stagnant, complacent or we can choose to transform. We can transform into a better version of ourselves or we can transform in the opposite direction. We each have a choice each and everyday. We can either choose to be better, to stay the same or to digress. What we choose will determine who we will become. Whether or not it is for that today, tomorrow or future. The decisions today will  not only effect us today but will effect who we will become, our future self. So choose wisely, choose for you, choose to be a Better Version of You, choose to transform into a New and Improve You, choose Love, Love for yourself. So how am I transforming. Each and everyday I make a choice to be Better, to do Better, to Love me more, to do things that uplift me. The most important thing I do each and everyday is I choose ME each and for that reason I am TRANSFORMING.

Get out of your HEAD!!!

How many times have you missed an exit or a turn because your mind was somewhere else? Or how many times have you forgot where you were going because you were thinking so hard or in your thoughts? I had that moment today actually, I missed my turn twice because I was in my thoughts thinking of the “What if’s” the “if I could do things differently I would”. Did that change my situation? Did it make things better? Actually no. Then I realized, you know what, while I’m so in my head thinking of the “What if’s” then I missed out on the ” What is” that was happening.

So what am I saying?

Stop being so caught up in the “What if’s” the “I should have” and just LIVE. In fitness we can beat ourselves up so bad because of not meeting a goal or thinking; “Well what if I don’t get that goal or that PR time?” I have realized in my fitness journey the less time I spend focusing on the “What if’s” the more the “What is” began to show up in my life. The more the goals were met because I was focused on what I can do in the here and now, at this moment versus focus on the what I should have done or what I could do. So stop stunting your strength, get out of your HEAD. Start living in the Here and Now and watch how you achieve those goals.

I Just Don’t Have Time

I Just Don’t Have Time

 

Have you ever heard yourself say this, “I just don’t have time” when you are trying to create a workout plan or trying to train for a race or simple start to engage in fitness? If not then, WOW, that’s awesome. I know that I have said this plenty of times.

So how do I do it?

How do I workout, take care of two girls, work a full time job and take care of other family duties? I plan, I take time to sit down and plan out my workouts, my weekly schedules, my family schedules. I am not claiming to have the best time management skills or the best regime. I include my family into my fitness. When you show your little ones, older ones the importance of taking care of themselves you are instilling a healthy lifestyle mindset that will be a huge benefit as they get older.

Why schedule time to workout?

I was definitely the one who said you know what, “I just don’t have the time, I am neglecting my family time with my girls, it is just wrong for me to take time out for me.” Well if you are thinking the same way I was thinking then the answer is NO it is not wrong, NO you are not neglecting your family and YES you do have time.

So why is it so important?

 

I will speak on a mother, woman perspective; as mothers we always spend so much time nurturing others, taking care of others, making sure that other people (family, friends, etc..) have what they need. However, we never take the time out for ourselves. We never engage in self-nurturing. Now do we have to workout in order to engage in self-nurturing? No, but that stress that you may be dealing with or that feeling of low self-esteem, low self-confidence that you may be experiencing, taking time out to workout, to engage in some form of fitness will help with building your self esteem, self confidence and that stress we deal with each and every day.

So stop telling yourself that you just don’t have time. Start telling yourself that you need to make time. Take time for YOU. Take time to help build yourself up both inside and outside. In order to be that strong person in your family you have to take care of yourself first. Yes you have to be a little selfish so that you can be that person you need to be for your family. So stop what you are doing and Start making time for YOU.  I read a great saying the other day, “Your body is a temple, stop treating it like a graveyard”

So be SELFISH and TAKE TIME FOR YOU

Curacao and “The Big Magic”

So this past weekend I was really able to venture out in the island of Curacao. This is my second time visiting this beautiful island and it is simply an amazing  island and experience. I started reading the book titled Big Magic about a month ago, reading this book has really allowed me to think about my life, my fears, my loves, my creativity.  I’ve always wanted to tap into my creativity but have lacked it because of the fear of being accepted. I think I’ve strive for so long to be who I thought that others wanted me to be, who I thought that others saw me as. In going through these stages of my life it allowed me to develop the concept of BeYounique because I realized even in myself that I am and  everyone is Unique. We should strive each and everyday to BE YOU not someone else or be who someone else thinks you should be but Be your authentic self. Be Bold, Be Brave, Be fearless simply Be You.. We should strive to be.. Be strong, Be Bold, Be You, Be unique… Be Younique…..

This beautiful island has shown me the diversity but yet authencity in each individual. I’ve learned when you finally tap into your authentic self that is when the magic happens, it’s when You become bold in who you are it’s when you become unique, when I become unique. So watch out world … it’s time for you to Beyounique

All this talk about Suppliments

So I commonly asked by my athletes that I treat about supplements. What supplements are good for you? What do I use? Do they really work? So I am by no way a Registered Dietitian or a Nutritionist. However, I am a certified athletic trainer and have completed extensive coursework on Sports Nutrition. So instead of me telling you what you should take in, I will utilize this time to let you know what supplements I use on a daily basis.

 

Vitamins

Vitamins, Vitamins, Vitamins we all are lacking in this area. I typically like to take in vitamins through food source but in reality I don’t get all that I need strictly from my food source. I like to take Centrum multivitamins. There are so many types of vitamins that are out there. I am a sucker to pills so I like my chewable gummies….Yeah don’t laugh at me but I love them. I typically take my vitamins first thing in the morning and is part of my morning regime. So why are vitamins so important? Vitamins is the substance needed to help your body grow and develop normally. Often times people are deficient in this area because of the way that they eat. In addition, you can eat very healthy diet and still be deficient in some of your vitamins and minerals.

So much talk about protein…So many different types of protein powders, drinks that you can take. First, I like to try to get all of my protein source from plant based or fish. I am a pescatarian so I primarily get my protein source from fish or plant based. In determining what type of protein powder you should buy you must first know what you are wanting to gain from taking in protein. Are you trying to just get in your daily amounts of protein? Are you trying to build muscle? Are you trying to lean out or develop lean muscle mass? If you are trying to build muscle then you want to get a protein that contains a good amount of whey protein. If you are trying to lean out or maintain then you can go with a protein based that doesn’t house as much whey protein. I use protein called Vega.. this fits within my daily eating and lifestyle. I like to have a protein that is more plant based so this is why I choose to have this type of protein

 

Amino Acids

Amino Acids are building blocks of protein. They help to reduce inflammation, promote recovery and healing. Amino Acids can be found in different types of fruit such as: blueberries, strawberries…As I like to say everything berry. If you are working out especially training throughout the day, it is important to take in Amino Acids to help aid in a quicker recovery and also help decrease the chance of injury from occurring.

 

Glutamine

Is the most common amino acid found in your muscles – over 61% of skeletal muscle is Glutamine. Glutamine helps improve protein metabolism which is beneficial in muscle recovery and muscle building

 

While exercise can be great, nutrition is what is important. As the saying goes, “You are what you eat” If you want your body to perform a certain way you have to nourish the body. If you are wanting to get rid of toxins then you need to not put toxins in your body. If you wanting to increase metabolism then you need to intake foods that will have increase your metabolic rate. So don’t forget about your nutrition. Also realize that many of these nutrients can be ingested from foods. So start out with the food source first then if you are still not getting enough you can research the different supplements and powders that are out there.

I AM FEARLESS

So some of you may know or may not know but I just completed a Dopey Challenge this past week which consisted of 4 days of racing. My runhomie and I ran a 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon in 4 days. So logistically we ran 48.6 miles in 4 days. I know my mouth just dropped thinking about what we just accomplished.

So about 3-4 months ago I suffered an aggravating injury of plantar fascitis. If any of you have ever been injured before you know that it can be very aggravating when you are not able to do the things you love to do. Well you can imagine how I felt. This race was planned back in December of 2015 so when you realize in September 2016 that there is a strong possibility that you will not be able to walk, run or do any type of physical activity it can be very discouraging.

Fast-Forward to January 2017

So I took time off which was sacrificing my ability to truly train. I had to become very creative and train differently to allow my foot time to heal. Well as I was flying to go to Florida to complete this big race so much fear came over me. I kept playing the “What if” card and I even did that on the last day of the 4 days prior to my marathon race. Finally, I said Fe if you quit every time you are fearful you will never accomplish anything. So I did my morning prayer, meditation and yoga that morning and I laced up my shoes and said to myself, “Let’s Do This”

Many of you have fears right now, fear of failure, fear of not being good enough, fear of looking a certain way. My words to you is don’t let FEAR stop you from accomplishing something BIG in your life. If I allowed FEAR to take over then I would have never known my biggest strength, my abilities to accomplish the unknown. I would have never been able to CREATE MAGIC. So stop letting FEAR take over your life and start stepping out on FAITH! Start creating MAGIC in your life.

You can do it…..Dreams do come true….Mine did and they are still coming true.
