Savor the Moment

Often times we get in the hustle and bustle of life and oddly enough my meditation today was all about stretching. At first I see these words and naturally think of stretching when you are trying to release a tight muscle or stretching because you don’t want to have any cramps or tightness in your body.

But this is a different type of stretching but holds the same meaning. When we stretch our bodies or a muscle we are stretching to help release tension and we are holding that pose for an extending period of time. Often times after holding a stretch we feel a sense of relief, we feel like a new person, simply a new feeling.

Well the kind of stretching I am referring to is different. This type of stretching deals with the moments in our lives.  As a society we have this on the go type feeling where we are always at a need to move, to go. But what if we stop for one moment and just stretched out the present moment, we live in the present state as long as we possibly can.

What would happen?

I’ll tell you what would happen we would experience things like no other, we would notice the beauty in that moment, it will allow us to cherish that moment. We would find peace and a sense of relief within that moment.

Why?

Because we are stretching out that moment, we are truly learning and embracing the present moment. This is the type of stretching that we need to do with our lives each and everyday. Take time out each day to release the habit of always on the go but get into the habit of embracing each present moment.

Stretching out each present moment so that we can experience it fully, 100%. So the next time your mind is wanting to go so many miles per minute. Take a second and just stretch out the present moment. See what you see, feel what you feel, embrace everything that moment has to offer. Just as stretching will help release tension in your body physically it can do the same thing mentally. Mentally it can help relieve tension in your mind and allow you to truly wholeheartedly enjoy the moment. So I invite you to not only stretch physically but let’s practice stretching mentally.

The Year of Completeness

So back from my hiatus I was inspired by a post that I wrote this time last year and as I was reading this post it really spoke to me. As I prepare this week to detach from the world…to embark on something that I would have never even imagine that I would have done. Then it dawned on me Felicia through it all you have grown, you have so much to be thankful for. It seemed like during the past couple of years I had more bad days than good days. But honestly it was through all those crazy days that I was able to truly define who I am, able to really see what God has in store, really able to see how my life is a testimony for others. See we often times think of this image of what a healthy life looks like but what we fail to realize healthy doesn’t just mean outward appearance but are you healthy from the inside out. So in celebration of my life I wanted to recap my past years so you can see that even while you are going through it may seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel; it is there you just have to be patient.

This is NOT OK

So almost 2 years back I was running my long run of 13 miles with my #runhomie and it just seemed like nothing that morning was going right. I had to stop several times to use the restroom, the gas station I normally stop at the employee was on break so I couldn’t use the restroom; so I had to proceed on with my run. If you have ever tried to run and you have to use the restroom then you know what I am talking about, not the best feeling ever. Then as I was running my heel begin to bother me; well at first I was like it just seems tight so I will keep running to see if it loosens up; well it did. Then I proceeded to run and it did just that it started to loosen up so I began to think okay well this is not going to be as bad as I thought.

Ummmm I was rudely awakened

I get about at the half way point of the run and of course we are out there so the only back is to just walk all the way back or run back. So I proceeded to run back.

Then it happened

I get back to my car and when I stopped I could feel it. It was not good, I was not okay.

So then I did what was the right thing to do, I went to the doctor and they told me I had a heel spur and also plantar fascitis.

I said to myself really not something else again, my exact words were, “Why can I not be GREAT?

So at this point I felt like there was so much going on in my life, from single motherhood to dealing with beginning stages of divorce, managing a job, two girls, one income, training and just LIFE.

I was forced to face reality, I was forced to say Fe you are not okay but guess what you will be okay.

So I began to start the healing process, began doing rehab and just trying to battle my way back. I knew I had other races lined up for the rest of the year and also the beginning of the year.

So I did what doctors ordered and when it was time I battled back. Well meanwhile during all this time of course life doesn’t just throw you one lemon but several lemons. So after completing all the races I was signed up for I finally said enough is enough Felicia it is time to really focus on you and get healthy. So I spent 6 months through physical therapy all while going through so many changes in my life….new job, selling my home, new home, divorce and just simply motherhood. I mean you name it everything that you can imagine someone going through I was going through it all. But one thing that I kept telling myself is that Felicia it will be okay. It is okay if it seems like your life is a mess right now. It doesn’t mean that you are going to always stay in that state.

See we all have this thing called pride that often times we have to face. We are ashamed of saying,

“You know what I am struggling today.”

“You know what I am having an OFF day today”

or

“You know what I am not OK at this moment”

What makes us stronger is the ability to recognize that and know that we will not be in that state very long.

To know that there is HOPE

To know that everything will be OK

To know that it is okay to have those days

To know that it is those days that help build us, help make us stronger

 

So what did I learn?

I learn that it is okay to not be OK.

It is okay to have an OFF day.

It is okay to say I am having an OFF day.

It is okay to say I am struggling right now.

What else did I learn?

It is when we face that everything is not OK that is when we BUILD when we get STRONGER and that is when we begin to have HOPE that even though at this very moment in time it may not be okay but I know that everything will be okay.

So here is to this craziness called Life, to lessons learn, to overcoming battles. Despite how things may seem or just seems like you can’t catch a break. It’s okay to not be okay the key is to not stay in that place. Dust yourself off and keep moving forward.

So now fastfoward to the year of 37….Why such a big meaning? 3 defines divine protection/guidance and 7 is completeness (both physically and spiritually) That is what Beyounique is all about is developing: STRONG MIND + STRONG SPIRIT= STRONG BODY (Completeness)

So what better way to display this than to go clear across the country and detach myself from the world and do what I absolutely love doing which is Yoga and Meditation. So as I begin my journey today in Bali, Indonesia know that despite whatever you may be going through there is hope, there is peace, there is a NEW DAY. In order to rebuild on a solid foundation sometimes we have to tear down the bad, the ugly, the not so good things that are lingering in our lives. So don’t give up on your dreams, don’t say I CAN’T dust yourself off and I say just because I can’t right now doesn’t mean I can’t it just means in due time I WILL.

And that my friends is the equation and solution for a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

Go out and BE GREAT!

It’s a new day, start of a new week, new journey, new You. So what are you waiting for? Are you waiting for approval? Are you waiting for someone to say You can Do It? Are you waiting for someone to discredit you or say you can’t do it. Don’t wait for approval. Don’t wait for someone to say you can do it. Go out and do it.. Go out and be Great. I remember a time when I always waited for others approval or I waited to see if anyone would congratulate me on whatever I did. If I felt as if no one congratulated me then I thought wow I must not have been great at it or I must have not done a great job. Why do we wait on others to validate us? Why do we wait on others to say good job? We wait or we thrive off of that because it makes us feel loved, it makes us feel accepted, it makes us feel that we belong, that we are somebody. So I am here to tell you stop waiting on others validations. Stop waiting for others to give you praise on your accomplishments. Go out and BE GREAT whatever that may look like, whatever it may feel like, no matter what anyone else says, no matter if anyone else sees it as a GREAT. IT IS GREAT, anything that you do that is bringing out the better version of YOU is being GREAT. So stop sitting back waiting on someone else to tell you to be GREAT. Go out and BE GREAT on your own:)

Happiness

So everyone wants to be happy, everyone wants to live a happy life but what does that look like? We are always caught up in what happiness should look like instead of realizing that happiness lies from within.

When I was younger I was like most little girls I dreamed that one day I would be famous and I would have this perfect life, with the perfect husband and perfect kids and just perfect fairy tale story. As I got older I quickly realized that there is no such thing as perfection. I never knew while I was growing up that I would face weight problems, depression, separation, anxiety, disappointment, single motherhood. That was never part of the picture. As I have gone through these things I have learned what true happiness is and what it is not.

I realized that happiness is not what we think that our life should look like, happiness is accepting where we are now and enjoying the life that we have now.

Why all of this talk about Happiness?

So as I went through all of these points in my life I realized that the reason that I was experiencing the weight gain, the depression, the anxiety, the stress issues is because I was not HAPPY, I thought my life was an uttermost mess because this wasn’t the picture of what Happiness is suppose to look like. As I have learned each and everyday is that we Create our Happiness. The more that we create our Happiness on our own level the happier we are.

So stop dwelling on what your life is suppose to look like or how you are suppose to be and embrace who you are today, be happy of what you have gone through and where you are today. Because that is what Creates your  Happiness.

 

How does this relate to fitness?

Well when you are unhappy you begin to stress, eat more, not eat at all, become less fit.

Stress= creates unhealthiness

Eating too much of bad foods= create unhealthiness

Not eating enough=create unhealthiness

Not engaging in physical activity= create unhealthines

 

So…………………………….

Tired of that weight gain, well do something about it. 

Tired of the depression and anxiety, do something about it.

Tired of not getting the results, do something about it.

Tired of not being happy, well stop and think why am I not happy.

 

We make the choice, we can choose to be happy or we can choose to live in the same state of being. Once we embrace and choose the happiness that is right in front of our faces the happier we will be, the healthier we will be, the more we will achieve the goals that we are setting out to achieve.

 

Strong mind + Strong Spirit= Strong Body

 

Enjoy the life you are living at this moment and time

Clean Up the Messes

The Mess

How many times have you gone home or in your office or looked at your desk and said, “Whew I need to clean up all this mess?” I know that I have plenty of times. So I may take a little at a time and begin to clean it up. But do we really clean it or do we just straighten it up so that it looks clean? That is how our lives are as well. Are we truly cleaning up the messes in our lives or are we just straightening things up just so that it appears that it is clean.

Don’t just Straighten up…Clean UP

Often times before we can truly grow or see growth in our lives we have to clean up the messes. I equate this to my spring cleaning that I am doing right now. It’s crazy how before you can truly get to the finish product the pile of crap and mess that is surrounded by you. That is how I life is…Often times in order to see that true growth sometimes we have messes that are still within ourselves, within our lives. I look at it like my girls sometimes I tell them to clean up their room and they will push all their clothes underneath their bed or they will put the clothes towards the back of the closet. That is similar with our lives….often times we think that everything is cleaned, everything is all good but we still have messes that we have swept under the bed, swept over into another corner. We must realize that in order to truly be at peace, truly be in that full growth we have to clean up all the messes that lies within our lives. When we finally tackle all the messes that is when true growth happens, that is when we can blossom, that is when we can truly walk in our true SELF. But in order to truly walk in your most Powerful SELF you have to clean up the messes first.

Slow Down

So often we get in a rush with our health and fitness journey. We want to tackle everything right now and be at that weight, that fitness level, that overall healthy lifestyle in one night. But we have to realize that it didn’t take one night to get in the position that we may be in right now.

I look at health and wellness like one big puzzle piece. If I was to give you a puzzle that was 150 pieces and laid it all on the floor and said here you go put this together and create. You would look at me like Ummmmm. That is how our health and fitness life is we want to tackle everything at once, we want to have all of our nutrition down, all of our exercise, all of our healthy behaviors exactly where it needs to be. But like the puzzle we have to take one piece of the puzzle at a time to get the completed puzzle. So take that same aspiration with your health and wellness goals. Tackle each step and each piece at a time. That is how you can create a routine which in the end will create a habit.

It’s not a destination, It’s a journey

Another area of our healthy lifestyle journey is that we look at the entire experience as a destination. When you think about a destination you are going from Point A to Point B. You will do one or two things when you get to that destination. You will either stay there or you will go back. That is not what we want for our healthy lifestyle journey, we want it to be lifelong journey and not a destination. When we look at that then it is better to understand why it is important to take baby steps, to tackle each piece of the puzzle one at a time.

Stay Focus on Progression

The last aspect of this journey is staying focus on the progress you make each day. Slow down and enjoy the journey. Realize that is the small steps that help lead to the big change. Realize that every progress is a success. It doesn’t have to be big, it doesn’t have to be that big giant leap or step. Celebrate the small steps, the small accomplishments. When we change our mindset of the overall journey that is when we begin to truly enjoy the journey

Remember this journey isn’t easy, there will be days that you want to give up, there will be days you say why am I doing this? Realize that this is not just about accomplishing a goal but it is about creating a lifelong healthy lifestyle not only for you but for others to follow your footstep. Let’s help create a world full of healthiness through the steps that we take.

Don’t Stop Writing Your Story

So often we set goals and we strive hard each and every day to achieve those goals. We train hard, we eat right, we change our schedules, our lives changed dramatically just so that we can complete that goal. And so we finally get to that day where we are finally ready to achieve that goal we have worked so hard for each and everyday. We do it! We did it! We completed that goal, We celebrate, we return back to our normal schedule or somewhat normal schedule. Then we realized wow what we have just accomplished; the goal we have just completed.

So now what?

Often times I get stuck in this……. what do I do next? Sometimes I stop completely from doing anything even related to my fitness or goals. So I ask myself,  “Why did you stop writing your story? This thing we call life is one big book filled with blank pages. What am I going to put in those pages? Am I going to wait until someone tells me what they think I should put in those papers? Heck NO! if I do that then how is that living my life purposefully. So each and everyday I strive to continue to write my story. I have only touch the first two pages of my book, there are so many other things out there for me to do. My story isn’t done yet, my full potential has not been met. I don’t want my book to be complete until I find my purpose here in this life. I want my book to  be filled with POTENTIAL not pages that say well she was going to do it but she was fearful, or heartbroken or dismayed, boggled down. I don’t want a book like that.  So as I often tell myself this very same thing, I am telling you. Don’t live a life that is fullfilling others dreams, write your own story. Continue writing your story until you have reach your full potential. We staggered our success because we just STOP writing our story. So how do I avoid that…..Well it is simple……DON’T stop writing your story. You have so much more to give to the world so let’s continue to give it.

Shed the OLD….Invite the NEW

So today being the first day of spring my meditation this morning was all about renewal. I love the change of seasons because it allows you to sit back and truly reflect on the old season and invite in the new season. This is what we have to do with our lives at times as well. Often times its important to take a moment and reflect on the past, reflect on the last season to truly determine where you want to go with the new season. What things do you want to get rid of? What things or people do you want to invite in? What aspirations are you seeking after? What new goals are you wanting to accomplish. In order to truly invite in the NEW with have to shed away the old…We have to let it go. Sometimes its hard but in order to grow you have to let go whatever may be holding you down. That can be a person, it can be fear, it can be doubt. Whatever it may be remember that a flower often times can not bloom unless it sheds away the bad, the old, the not so good. So take time today and reflect on what you want to invite in on this new season and what you want to shed away. Remember in order to invite Newness have to shed away the OLD.

Often times in our journey whether it is the journey of fitness, journey of career or just overall journey of LIFE we count ourselves out before we even begin. We begin to second guess ourselves prior to even accomplishing that goal, dream, task or vision. We begin to create this assumption of what others may think or the assumption that we will not be great, we will not succeed. However, when we truly tap into our  self worth, self confidence our inner strength we begin to walk with Boldness in everything we do. We begin to walk with our heads held high realizing that no matter what may come of any situation that we have the courage and the strength knowing that we at least SHOWED UP, we at least believed in ourselves to do the impossible, we are doing the impossible, knowing that despite it all we are being who we are created to be and that is being a bold, powerful, authentic self. So despite what others may think or say continue to walk in boldness, continue to show up each and everyday in your beautiful authentic self. Why? Because when we decided to walk in that manner we become bolder, we do the impossible, we tap into our inner self, we tap into our GREATNESS, we begin to show our true STRENGTH in SELF.

Embracing the Present YOU

So I often speak about this but in our fitness journey we are often taunted with our past or with the notion of what we can not do. However, we never really take the time to embrace the moment that we are in, the accomplishments we have made thus far. We are our biggest critics and we often put so much pressure on ourselves that instead of it encouraging ourselves we provide discouragement. We often times let social media take control over our lives that we begin comparing. We start looking at what others are doing and think we are less than because of what we haven’t accomplished. We begin to categorized ourselves based off of not only fitness accomplishments but our overall life accomplishments. The one thing that we fail to realize as we are doing this that someone else is looking at us the same way. They are looking at our accomplishments wishing they were where we are. The cycle just continues on and on and on. But we must stop and really look at ourselves. Stop and focus on where we are, what we have accomplished thus far.

As I glance at this photo that was taken a year ago I begin to really be amazed at the sky and how beautiful it is. I also begin to really focus on the water and how peaceful it seems. I said to myself, “Wow this is simply beautiful”; just caught in the present moment of it’s beauty. So I really begin to equate this to our lives and thought to myself if I would just take a moment each day before I get started with my day and  really embrace ME, LOVE ME and really begin to give compliments to myself. Do you know how motivating, invigorating and encouraging that would feel? Do you think I would have a positive outlook on what I have to do for that day? Of course I would, what people often fail to realize is that this healthy journey and lifestyle is not all about just how many workouts can you do; this journey is about mentally how do you feel about yourself. Do you tear yourself down each and everyday? Do you love yourself for who you are on THIS day?

So take time out each day and really sit back and Embrace the Present YOU! Be grateful, thankful and Love the NEW YOU.

  • Love the changes your body is going through even if it is not where it needs to be.
  • Love who you have become both inner and outer.
  • Love the fact that you care so much about your health and your body that you chose to change your life.
  • Love the downfalls that you have gone through as it has only made you stronger.
  • Love and Embrace the flaws, the things that you hope to change
  • Love the inner strength you have to get up each and everyday and face this thing called LIFE

So I ask you to really LOVE YOURSELF UNCONDITIONALLY but in order to do that you must first Embrace the Present YOU!
